About Me and This

Hi there, thanks for stopping by. My name is Tom and I’ve been working in regular giving since 2004. When I say “worked in regular giving” you will notice that this is both an incredibly specific and spectacularly vague thing to say, so allow me to clarify a little.

Regular Giving

When i say regular giving I mean the act of giving to a charity on a regular, usually monthly, basis through by direct debit or credit card payment. Its widely regarded as one of the most cost effective And effective ways of fundraising and I think it’s fab

What Of It?

Regular giving is a beast with many heads. Personally I have a had a number of different jobs related to the sector. I started as a face to face fundraiser, standing on street corners and knocking on doors, recruiting perplex to become regular givers. Face to face fundraising sometimes gets a bad rep from the public, I thinks it’s amazing and beautiful, and I’m sure I’ll discuss why in a blog post at some point. After being a fundraiser, I ran teams of fundraisers en trained people to run teams of fundraisers. These jobs gave me hands on experience of people making the split second decision to commit to a charity for years to come, or in some cases, months, or in many more cases not to. The are a lot of nos in face to face.

Just The Pointy End?

No, not just that. After that I worked in account and operational management at a face to face agency. This taught me the ins and outs of running regular giving recruitment campaigns; where multi-million dollar programs go right and go wrong. I helped innovate, improve and troubleshoot through a number of different issues. It was fun, we helped change the world and I some how avoided pulling all my hair out.

Just Face to Face Then?

No, but that’s a a big and important part of it. Nowadays I work for a an Australian environmental organization. Looking after the RG program that brings in a large part of our income. I deal with more than recruitment, I now get to look after the donors whole relationship with the organization; the good, the bad times and declines, the attrition, and the contrition.

I don’t know everything about regular giving and writing this blog is far from me giving the black and white answers about how it works. Its a way for me to talk about some of my experiences, how I overcame them and more importantly to invite other people to discuss what i should have done, so please don’t be shy in the comments.

Are All Views Your Own

Of course.   They don’t necessarily represent that of the organisation I work for.
